On 30 July 1962, with the blessing of His Holiness and beatitude, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Eprem II, Pastoral Courses were founded in the town of Mtskheta. On the basis of these courses, a theological seminary was established in 1965. On 6 October 1988, with the blessing of His Holiness and Beatitude, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Archbishop of Mtskheta and Tbilisi and Metropolitan of Tskhum-Apkhazeti, Tbilisi Theological Academy and Seminary was established and the aforementioned Mtskheta Theological Seminary served as the basis for the latter. 

On 13 September 1990, a theological institute, composed of two faculties – Christian Anthropology and Christian Art - was founded under the auspices of the Academy and Seminary. The graduates of the Seminary, Academy and Theological Institute acquired the status of teachers of theological subjects. 

On 3 October 2005, one more faculty was added to the aforementioned list; it was the Faculty of Ecclesiastical Architecture, Iconography and Restoration of Easel and Monumental Iconography. That same year, the Faculty of Christian Anthropology was altered into the Faculty of Psychology and Study of Religions, the graduates of which acquired the qualification of a psychologists and a specialists of the Study of Religions. Apart from it, the Faculty of Christian Art was altered into the Faculty of Christian Art and Study of Religions. Its Graduates acquired the qualification of Art Critics and specialists of the Study of Religions. 

On 25 December 2014, Tbilisi Theological Academy and Seminary was granted authorization which modified this educational institution into its present structure. Today, five faculties are functioning here: Tbilisi Theological Academy; Tbilisi Theological Seminary; Christian Psychology; Christian Art History and Theory; Ecclesiastical Architecture, Iconography, Restoration of Easel and Monumental Iconography. 
 

The Faculty of Ecclesiastic Architecture, Iconography and Restoration of Easel and Monumental Iconography


The Faculty of Ecclesiastic Architecture, Iconography and Restoration of Easel and Monumental Iconography operates with three programmes. Upon a successful graduation, the students are conferred the following degrees:

The Programme of Iconography – “Bachelor of Theological Science in Iconography”;

The Programme of the Restoration of Easel and Monumental Iconography – “Bachelor of Theological Science in the Restoration of Easel and Monumental Iconography”;

The Programme of Ecclesiastical Architecture – “Bachelor of Theological Science in Ecclesiastical Architecture”.

The offered programme consists of 247 credits and is conducted by 2 members of the academic staff and 18 invited specialists of high qualification. At present, the faculty works with 21 students.
