Department of History of the Church, Canonical Law and Ascetics

The Department of History of the Church, Canonical Law and Ascetics encompasses three dimensions. A course of History of Christian Church describes significant historical events, which played a decisive role in the history of the Church. It embraces main historical stages of the evolvement of Theological thought. A course of Canonical Law introduces main principles of the fundamentals of the Canonical law of the Orthodox Church. It studies the decrees of Ecumenical and Local Councils which have played an important role in the ecclesiastical canonical practice. A course of Ascetics introduces the history of ascetics of the pre-Christian period and that of the Christian era. Students study two sides of Ascetics – the one practiced by lay individuals and the spiritual discipline practiced by monks. The study of these subjects helps the future clergymen to take the right orientations in their spiritual lives and prepares the ground for a wide scope of reasoning. The head of the department is Dr. of Theology, Professor, Archpriest Maxime Chanturia.
